Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is just what it sounds like: you’re legs feel like they’re gnawing, pulling, or creeping, i.e., restless. You get an overwhelming urge to move your legs because of the general uncomfortableness this causes.
Because you just can’t seem to find a good position, you have a tough time getting any quality sleep. Restless legs syndrome can cause chronic insomnia, leading to poor performance in the daytime and an increased risk of numerous health issues.
According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, restless legs syndrome, of varying degrees of severity, may affect as many as 10% of all Americans. Also, RLS is twice as common in women than men, though it occurs in both.
