Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) have become an important part of our diet. New research continues to show how important they are to losing weight, keeping weight off, promoting lean tissue and staying energized. While not essential to life, medium-chain triglycerides are a great example of how we can optimize our fitness efforts to improve our results.
Of course, most often when you hear about triglycerides, it’s about how they increase the risk of heart disease. Triglyceride levels are even measured as a part of testing to see if you have the metabolic syndrome.
That’s a different kind of triglyceride. As you might expect from something called “medium-chain,” they aren’t the only kind. There are also long-chain triglycerides, and these are the ones causing the trouble.
Medium-chain triglycerides are something of an exception to the rule. They are a form of oil containing fat, no doubt about it. However, as a result of their chemical composition, MCTs are metabolized quickly into energy for our bodies. Long-chain triglycerides first go to the liver and are often stored as fat. MCTs are kind of like sugar in how they give us that quick boost. Unlike sugar, though, MCTs can help improve your Insulin Efficiency.
Because our bodies can turn MCTs into energy so quickly, they are very useful for improving your workouts. MCTs actually contain more energy than carbohydrates.
Medium-chain triglycerides are a great way to get energy without worrying about storing it as fat and are a very useful tool in weight loss. Studies have shown, though, that MCTs help reduce how much fat you put on as well. That’s an important aspect of your health. Reaching your goals won’t matter very much, especially down the line, if you can’t maintain them. MCTs are very useful in that regard.
Also, since MCTs are metabolized right into energy for your body, they keep you more active overall, and thereby more likely to burn even more fat off. MCTs have even been shown to increase how satisfied you feel after meals, meaning less overeating and less snack cravings later.
Losing weight and keeping it off is great, but it’s also important to add healthy tissue to your body as well. MCTs promote lean tissue growth, giving you the trim, toned physique of health.
One of the reasons why medium-chain glycerides have become popular only recently has been their availability. They simply aren’t in very many foods. However, some, like coconut oil, are rich in MCTs naturally. Up until the 1980s, scientists had been unable to create MCTs in the lab.
That’s not the case any more. MCTs are easily taken in powder or pill form as supplements.
