Glutamine is a type of amino acid, a building block of protein. While there are many different types of amino acids, glutamine falls into the category of “conditionally essential”. This means that, while your body usually gets enough from your diet, there are conditions under which you would do well to have glutamine supplementation.

Glutamine helps your body reduce inflammation from your gastrointestinal tract, and can improve your immune system and Insulin Efficiency. In fact, Olumia Life Chief Scientist, Dr. Steven Willey recommends taking 5 grams of a glutamine supplement every day, whether you work out or not.

The benefits of glutamine

If you spend some time on the internet researching glutamine, as with anything, you’ll find a host of differing opinions and reported levels of efficacy. Olumia Life is constantly working to ensure that the most up-to-date, proven information is what you receive. With that in mind, it’s worth noting that there is plenty of marketing out there that would have you believe glutamine is the end-all cure to disease prevention and nutrient timing. It’s not, but when used properly for the correct reasons, it is an important part of the puzzle.

Glutamine for your guts

The first benefit of glutamine has to do with gut permeability, or the level at which particles are able to travel between the cells of your intestines. Normally, the cells are packed tightly, allowing only nutrients to pass through.

If your gut flora is off or if you are consuming a lot of fructose or even ibuprofen, the cells develop gaps between them and bacteria, toxins and even undigested food can pass through. This can lead to all sorts of gut problems with symptoms like diarrhea and abdominal pain. In the absence of symptoms it can also cause, as toxins enter your bloodstream, mild inflammation throughout the body. As we know from the opposing systems of breakdown and repair, this can lead to undue weight gain and cardiovascular problems, like diabetes and heart disease.

Glutamine for workouts

Olumia Life doesn’t recommend a lot of supplements. In fact, with a healthy diet, you don’t need multivitamins at all. Glutamine, however, is one of the few things you should start taking every day, and not only to improve gut permeability.

Glutamine and energy

As Dr. Steve says in his book, Reprogram Your Life: Bioscience for a Healthier You, “Supplements of glutamine help the muscles rebuild their levels of glycogen, or stored glucose, back to their maximum level. Eating carbohydrates will also restore glycogen, but glutamine can do it without the extra calories.”

Restoring energy in your muscles can also enhance your Insulin Efficiency, meaning your body doesn’t need as much insulin to distribute energy in your body. One study, published in the Journal of Applied Physiology, found that glucose disposal (how fast energy from the bloodstream is absorbed by tissue) was improved by glutamine in combination with carbohydrates by a full 25% two hours after exercise.
